Excellente méthode que j'utilise depuis deux ans avec un élève:c'est passionnant et il apprend le grec comme en jouant. Nous parlons grec classique (notamment néotestamentaire)en classe. Le Cd aide beaucoup. Vivement recommandé.
L'édition française de ce livre n'est plus disponible, on n'en trouve plus que des exemplaires d'occasion à des prix exorbitants: je vous recommande donc d'acheter la nouvelle édition en anglais (Polis - Speaking Ancient Greek as a Living Language) que vous trouverez sur amazon. Il s'agit là quasiment d'un nouveau livre : on reprend certaines leçons de la première édition, mais on y trouvera beaucoup de nouveaux chapitres. Le texte est entièrement renouvelé. L'édition anglaise compte 20 chapitres contre 12 pour les éditions précédentes en français, allemand ou italien. Chaque leçon se termine sur un lexique exemplifié par des phrases grecques qui permettent d'en deviner le sens sans avoir besoin de traduire. Les fichiers audio sont librement téléchargeables sur le site [...]Vous pouvez feuilleter le livre sur la page correspondante d'amazon.Le deuxième volume de cette méthode est très avancé et j'espère qu'il pourra paraître en 2017 ou 2018. Il y aura, in fine, trois volumes en tout pour couvrir l'ensemble des éléments de la morphologie grecque.
This ancient greek method is unique in two aspects: it's based in Koine greek, the post-classical common learned language, and it teachs koine greek as a living, spoken language. So, the method is a little similar to those of English, German or Spanish.Of course, ancient (koine) greek is no more a spoken language, and the text has anachronisms and some neologisms (sometimes perhaps forced) because the characters in the texts are modern persons, includig Prof. Rico himself (or his funny caricature). But the method, in these first steps, works very well, and the student can learn a lot of vocabulary and structures inmersively through various common life situations, dialogues and pictures. And the CD with the recorded dialogues helps a lot in adquiring vocabulary and feel a "living" language.It's a good classroom stuff, but, as self study method, it's better to have a teacher (and Prof Rico, it seems, teachs in ancient greek!); it's not a grammar or a comprehensive book (like a classroom german book isn't a german grammar). There is a lot of exercises (fill holes, etc) that work better in oral sesions.It must be said that it is a first book of more coming books; it has 12 lessons and a very basic vocabulary and grammar. Vocabulary at the end is cleverly disposed with example sentences and is very inmersive.The greek pronuntiation is the traditional erasmian one and not the reconstructed historical pronuntiation (in the CD for example, TH is english "think" and KH german "loch" or spanish "Jefe",but Z is "sd") The stress is not tonal, the subscript "iota" is not pronounced, and Prof Rico makes differences between long and short vowels, but other characters not.Theres is excellent Attic Greek inmersive methods like "Reading Greek", Assimil's "Grec Ancien" (both with reconstructed pronuntiation) or "Athenaze", but Rico's Polis fills a hole with koine greek. As Rico wisely sais in Introduction, we have by far more texts (and very important ones) and authors who wrote in koine (not only New Testament or LXX) than in attic classical greek; and koine extended as common cultural and universal language by a lot of countries and during a lot of centuries.I wait for the coming volumes. I'm trained in "cassical" greek (homeric, jonic, attic) but a method like Polis has much to teach.
This is the premise behind Rico's fine new book, to teach you Ancient Greek as a living language. People learn Ancient Greek so as to read it, but it has long been recognized that in order to learn Greek well, you have to use it, that is listen to it, write it, speak it, think in it. Virtually all text books before this have focused on passively reading Greek. Rico has you spend more time listening to and writing Greek than you do reading. He teaches you conversational stuff that you will not get in other books, counting to ten, days of the week, even how to say "My name is..." For people learning modern languages, this seems like a no brainer, but trust me, you have never seen a book on a "dead language" like Rico's. It has great illustrations and large, multi-colored fonts. The exercises you do, completing the endings on select words in larger readings, choosing between GAR and OUN, matching verbs to prepositional phrases, figuring out what is on the other end of telephone coversation in Greek, are all meant to get you to USE Ancient Greek, not just to read or memorize paradigms. Rico's entire book is in Ancient Greek, the chapter headings, the instructions, and even the glossary. Rather than give you a one word gloss of the vocablulary, Rico gives you a sentence in Greek for every word you learn. This itself is worth the price of the book. Also included is a list of GREEK (not Latin) grammatical terms.But is the audio c.d. which is the best feature of Polis. A few other Greek text books come with limited audio, for example Dobson's book. But here again Rico's is a whole new ball game. He has several speakers in his dialogues, and they all sound great, natural, with real emphasis, at different speeds, with slighlty different accents, but all pleasant and often very witty to listen to. Rico basically uses an Erasmian pronunciation, although he conflates omicron and omega. For those who prefer Modern Greek or Randall Buth's Restored Koine, this will be a disappointment, but for those of us who are either used to Erasmus or prefer a pronunciation which is more phonetic, that Rico uses Erasmus is a plus.Rico's book is meant for beginners, but as with many Greek books, intermediate learners will probably get more out of it. Whether you believe that Living Language Methods are essential to learning Greek or not, they are at the very least fun. I imagine that most people who get Polis will supplement it with a Mounce or a Machen. Dozens of those types of books are available, but with Polis, Rico breaks new ground, joining Randall Buth in presenting a truly new way to learn (and to improve) your ancient Greek. I should also mention that this is just the first volume in a series Rico plans to write. This text gives you about 40% of the grammar you will need to read Ancient Greek. He does expose you to a lot of vocabulary, but again not enough in this first volume.Unless you are a real beginner, the fact that Polis is in French is irrelevant, because it's also in Greek. If you are just starting to learn Greek, you probably either have to know French or wait for the English translation (due out some time 2011) or you will need to use this book only to supplement something else. But I cannot imagine that there is anyone who loves Greek who will not find Rico's book helpful and lots of fun. Enter the Polis the way the Greeks did, through the gates of living language!
